2019-2020 PLACEMENT GUIDE FOR SCW SPANISH CLASSES

READ ALL BEFORE SELECTING CLASSES

_____I’ve had no exposure to Spanish except knowing a few words.

_____I can introduce myself and ask someone’s name. I know some phrases. I know the alphabet and lower numbers. I need more practice at the basic level.

Checking either of the above would suggest Spanish is Fun Bk1 Beginning 1 with MaryAnn on Monday or Wednesday or with Rosemary starting in January.

_____I basically understand how verbs work to talk about the present, but I need more practice. I understand that words can be masculine or feminine and can change words to plural. I can describe something using simple words.

_____I have studied Beginning Spanish Level 1 with MaryAnn or Rosemary and understand what I learned. I’m ready to move on to Chapter 9 of Bk. 1.

_____I can do all of the above, but I want to stay at this level for practice and vocabulary.

Checking any of the 3 statements above suggests placement in Spanish is Fun Bk 1 Beginning 2 with Brenda in Monday or Wednesday class.

____I have studied with Brenda or have studied Spanish in the past and remember much of what I studied.

_____I want to finish Book 1 of Spanish is Fun and learn to speak in the future and simple past..

_____I want to improve my basic Spanish speaking with a teacher who is fluent in Spanish in order to improve my skills in listening and speaking.

Checking one or more of the above statements would indicate placement in Spanish is Fun Bk1 Beginning 3 with Joyce on Mondays.

_____I can speak in the present tense about things like family, weather, and activities. I can ask and answer simple questions, tell what I like, briefly describe items, and tell where something is located. I understand what I read, but it’s hard to understand what others say to me in Spanish. I can speak a little but need to pause often to find the Spanish expression. I want to practice speaking using what I’ve learned.

_____I have completed Spanish is Fun Bk 1 and would like to expand my vocabulary and practice speaking and listening with a teacher fluent in Spanish, but I don’t want a lot of grammar.

_____I haven’t done Spanish is Fun Bk 1, but I’ve studied Spanish and want to expand my vocabulary and practice speaking, listening, and reading with a teacher fluent in Spanish, but I don’t want to study much grammar.

Checking one of the above would suggest Beginning Reading for Discussion and Vocabulary with Eleine on Tuesdays and/or Conversation with Bill on Fridays.

_____I’ve have been studying with Jim and would like to complete the final chapters of Bk. 2.

_____I’d like to learn the Command Forms and Subjunctive and advance in upper level Spanish.

_____I’ve studied Spanish for many years and once spoke fairly fluently, but I’d like to review the more complex parts of the language.

Checking one of more of the above would Spanish is Fun Bk 2 Part 3 on Tuesdays with Jim.

Destinos class is in the planning stages. Please note on your Class Registration Form if you’d like to be kept informed on the development of this class.

_____I’ve can read and understand a great deal of Spanish, but I need to improve my listening.

Listening is the focus in Destinos, an audio/visual class with Lola on Tuesdays.

_____I’ve learned almost all the verb tenses and want to improve my vocabulary and fluency by reading and discussing what I’ve read.

_____I can understand advanced written Spanish, but I still can’t understand the spoken language. I want to improve my understanding and practice conversing with familiar topics.

_____I have studied present, past, and future tenses, as well as indirect and direct object pronouns. My vocabulary is OK, so now I want to practice speaking, reading, and writing to use the language and become comfortable with it.

_____I want to be able to converse, but I might need a story or an assignment to help me get started. I prefer speaking about my experiences or something I have read.

If you still aren’t sure which class(es) you should attend, you are welcome to sit in on a class and observe. Just arrive ahead of class and tell the facilitator you are observing the class. Feel free to ask questions about the class before or after class so as not to take class time away from those attending.
