Our Fiesta Chair is Jo Keitges.  Jo gave a short overview of the upcoming Fall Fiesta.  She stated that the fiesta will be held at the Palm Ridge Summit Room A on November 8 at 5:00.  There is no charge for entry but everyone attending needs to sign up and to bring tapas for 10.  Water and soft drinks will be provided.

Our member at large is Tish Iwaszuk who will not be back in the area until January but is still reachable via E-Mail.  Tish is the pubic point of contact for the club.

In addition to the Board of Directors, we have several active members doing important things for the Club.

Something many of us enjoy is Friday night at the movies.  Steven Hohl selects and shows our movies.  (Steve not present)  Steve brought us 4 movies last year about the Hispanic culture.  Our next movie is Friday night, November 16th.  A flyer will be sent out soon.

Another activity many of us enjoy is playing Mexican Train, a domino game that is a great opportunity for socializing and practicing Spanish.  Arline Foster organizes the sactivity.  The next one is scheduled for October 20th from 1 to 3 PM at  Beardsley.  (Arline not present)

Our book club has a full slate of interesting reads for October through April.  The books are in English and are about the Hispanic culture.  Check the Website for details and contact Jo Keitges or myself if you would like to join.

The Club Officer Slate for 2019: in accordance with our bylaws, we notify the membership of the slate of officer recommended by our nominating committee.  At this time the candidates are:

  • President: Lee Howard
  • Vice-president: Miriam (Mimi) Williams
  • Treasurer: Cecelia Weigand
  • Secretary: Paul Voorhees
  • Public Relations: Diane Heisner
  • Fiesta Chair: Jo Keitges

Paul asked for any additional nominations from the floor but none were suggested.  He stated that nominations would be entertained again at our November meeting with the final vote occurring in December for 2019 officers and board members.

There was no other old business brought forward from the floor.

New Business

Presidents Announcements:
The president announced two events in October:

  1.  Registration and Reunion meeting to be held on October 11 in the Shuffleboard room. Information regarding the meeting will be sent out well in advance but do save the date.
  2. Travel Meeting is scheduled for October 16 at 9:00AM in the Mesquite Room at Beardsley. If you have an interest in a particular travel destination, or would like to hear the interests of others, please plan on attending. The club’s travel policy is posted on our website and guides our travel activities.

The president asked if there is any old or new business to discuss?  No one responded.

Jim Khami was introduced to give an overview of the trip to Peru attended by seven members of the Spanish Club. Jim indicated that Peru was beautiful and they had a wonderful time.

President’s view of the success of the Spanish Club:
It’s hard to know where to start. We now have over 200 members and over 60% are participating in language classes. Thanks to the dedication of our teachers and assistants, the growth in classes is becoming a real challenge.  As an aside, it was pointed out to me recently that learning a language is  one the best mental health exercises possible. So in addition to learning something very useful and having fun, the benefits of continuing language studies will impact our well-being everyday we wake up.  It’s also obvious that this club is multi-dimensional.  In addition to learning Spanish, our book club reads about the cultures and history of Spanish speaking countries, we travel to several of them, and we enjoy movies and games that further our understanding and enjoyment.  I encourage all to take advantage of all these opportunities.

Motion to Adjourn:
There being no further business, the general meeting was adjourned.

Spanish Club Minutes of the General Meeting

February 16, 2018

The General Meeting was held in conjunction with the Valentine Fiesta at Shuffle board room at the RH Johnson Recreation Center.

President Paul Voorhees called the meeting to order at 6:20 PM.

Minutes
The minutes of the December 8, 2017, General Meeting were accepted without change.

Presidents Announcements
A reminder was provided that there will be no language classes Monday the 19th as the Beardsley recreation center has pre-empted our use of the classrooms due to 40th Anniversary activities. This is only for one day.

The next Mexican Train game night will take place on Tuesday, February 20 from 1PM to 3PM in the Mesquite room, and after that on March 20. Contact Arline Foster for further information.

The Next Movie night will be in the Agave room on February 23 at 7PM. Evita will be shown free of charge, and light refreshments will be provided. There is a good description of the film on our website, and Stephen Hohl can be contacted with any questions.

Book club will meet Wednesday, March 14th to discuss Gone For Soldiers, a novel about the Mexican American War. Lt. Robert E. Lee is one of the main characters.

Language classes have grown substantially in recent months. In January there were about 160 students in class. With membership now at just over 200, about 80% are enrolled in classes. As a result, and to ensure students learning interests can be met, the Board recently approved changes in the registration process and the management of classes. The changes mainly involve doing the planning for these classes in the Spring for the following year to ensure we have the teachers and classroom space to accommodate them. Look for more details in the upcoming newsletter.

The next cooking class will be March 7th. Karen Brown and Keka Wessman will conduct the class; contact Karen sign up.

There are two travel opportunities in the coming months. Jim Khami, our travel coordinator, provided an update to the trip to Peru, and Eleine Greene provided an update on the language immersion trip to Mexico.

If anyone has an interest in a particular travel destination they should contact Jim Khami. The details of the Peru and Mexico trips are also on the website.

Teachers were thanked for their continued efforts, as well as the 30 some volunteers we have doing the activities that make this club a success.

The next general meeting will be April 13th at the Beardsley Ramadas. It will be a Taco dinner provided members free by the club, and a social hour to follow. More details will be available in the coming months.

The nominating committee consisting of Paul Voorhees, Lee Howard, Don Thayer, Barb Dorr, Jan Gameros and Jim Dodson met on April 24, 2017 to consider candidates for the 2018 term of office. In September our committee submitted a slate of candidates for consideration. Since then, Jim Jasken has decided to continue with the club’s newsletter but not seek the secretarial role. Jim Dodson has agreed to replace Jim as the candidate for secretary. In addition, Mary Ann Jasken decided to withdraw her nomination for member-at-large candidate but will continue with her teaching role. Tony presented the modified slate of candidates: (shown below)

Public Relations Chair:  Diane Heisner
Fiesta Chair:                     Jo Keitges

Election
Maureen thanked the committee for the work of selecting a slate of officers

The new board was presented to all the club members present

Board Members Leaving – President’s Comments
Two members of the board are leaving at the end of this term – Margaret Rauch and Mary Ann Jasken
Margaret Rauch has served on the board as our public relations chair. She has taken charge of our website, the publicity that we place in the Rec News, the Independent and elsewhere. It is a lot to do and she has been 100% reliable, on time, up to date, all the while keeping the officers informed and moving things forward. The club has been well served and we owe Margaret our thanks.
Mary Ann Jasken has been on the board this year and she also served as our club president in 2014 and 2015. In addition she has been a teacher and an important contributor to most of the club’s activities and undertakings. The structure and cohesiveness of the club’s teaching program as it exists today is due in large measure to Mary Ann’s dedication, hard work and organizational ability and foresight. She has been constantly generous with her time and her gifts. We owe her a huge debt of gratitude.

Karin Peterson is club secretary and photographer.
Olivette Miller is treasurer, and she was asked to give a report on our finances.
Jo Keitges is in charge of planning our fiestas.
Margaret Rauch keeps our website current. Travis encouraged frequent checking of our website for information on upcoming events, fiesta photos, and classroom information.
MaryAnn Jasken is the teachers’ representative to the board.
John O’Donnell is vice president of the Club as well as board representative at teachers’ meetings.
Tish Iwaszuk is our member-at-large and the contact person for our club (tish@iwaszuuk.com). She also manages our participation in the Rec Center’s open house events, and she created and updates our information bulletin board at Beardsley center.
Jim Khami, one of our teachers, organized a trip to Spain this past spring that was enjoyed by an enthusiastic group of 21 club members and their guests.

New Business:
1. Friday night at the movies, with films in Spanish with English subtitles or vice versa, is offered by Pamela Watson and Laura Johnson, and four movies were shown last year. They again are offering this popular venue this year, and the first movie night of the season is set for October 28 at 7:00 pm. The movie is titled “Historias Minimas.” For a $1.00 entrance fee plus free cookies, this is an event not to be missed. Films are shown in the Agave room at Beardsley Rec Center, and Travis promises excellent audio reception because of our newly installed electronic system.

2. Travel Ideas for 2017: Jim Khami came to the podium to speak of the advantages of group travel, making lasting friendships and sharing common interests. He realizes that often cost is an issue, and he is trying to offer a variety of choices. Fliers are available at the reception desk about travel opportunities with Club Español, with Jim’s email information for further questions and suggestions. He mentioned travel to Mexico’s Copper Canyon, Costa Rica, Guatemala and South America, particularly Peru.

3. Nominating Committee: Tony Iwaszuk, nominating committee chair, introduced the new members of the board, and praised the committee for an excellent job in preparing the list of new board members for the year 2017.

4. Mary Ann utilized the overhead projector to guide old and new members through the process of filling out their application forms. In addition, she pointed out that the signup sheet for classes also asks for volunteers in various capacities. Particularly computer savvy individuals are in high demand as go-to consultants to help with our web site and Microsoft Word problems that our newsletter reporters may encounter.

5. Class facilitators then introduced themselves and their individual class level and content. Anna’s position has not yet been filled, but she volunteered to stay on until January 2017 if no one has been found. She also pointed out that it is necessary to open the classrooms 15 minutes before nine o’clock to allow teachers to access the rooms before students arrive.

6. When filling out application forms it is important to include an email address as that is our best way to share information of upcoming events.

Motion to adjourn.
